Where: Hendersonville Library
When: Thursday, January 21
Time: 4:30-5:30
Speaker: TEA President Earl Wiman
Why: To play a part in the up-coming election process…to have influence over your work environment.
As you are all aware, some members of the Sumner County Board of Education have caused concern by voting in a manner not always inclusive of educator views, suggestions or findings by committees. This August, 6 of the 11 seats are up for reelection. They are:
Mike Fussell, 1st District , Don Long, 3rd District , Rob wheeler, 5th District , Ben Harris, 7th District 7, Will Duncan, 9th district, and David Brown, 11th district.
If teachers are to have a work friendly environment, professional treatment, and equitable pay as a priority, these goals MUST start with each member on our school board.
Please review TEA’s official position of Race to the Top.

Important Meeting About Pending Education Legislation
0 Comments | Posted by Alex in Legislation
On January 19, 2010 a Race to the Top Grant Proposal from the Tennessee Department of Education will be submitted to the Federal Department of Education. The contents of this grant proposal are far reaching and do not take into account the reality of an educational setting. Whether or not Tennessee receives this grant changes in education law effecting tenure, salary, and other issues will be voted upon this Friday!
Mrs. Cox and Mary Pappas spent Monday speaking to your Representatives and Senators concerning these changes and listened to a three hour overview of the proposed legislation and Grant Proposal to be submitted on January 19, 2010. The purpose of this meeting is to share with you first hand correct information.
According to the information presented the teaching profession as we know it will drastically change – rules for receiving and retaining tenure will change; your salary schedule will change. It is a necessity for each and every professional employee of Sumner County to be aware of and address these issues.
It cannot be emphasized enough the importance of your attendance at this meeting.
This meeting is open to ALL teachers of Sumner County. This is too important not to make everyone aware of what is happening in the legislature. Please attend and find out what you can do to affect the outcome of this legislation.
With the cancellation of school for January 7, tomorrow’s legislative forum has postponed. It will be rescheduled. Please check this site for the new date.
Many questions are being asked about the early start of the 2010 legislative session. This document gives some information expected in the session. It may also help you with questions if you plan to attend the legislative forum at Station Camp High on January 7.
As Tennessee prepares to make it’s case for Race to the Top funds many of us have questions and concerns. While not everything is known about Governor Bredeson’s legislation TEA has taken a position on certain core issues. Please take the time to download the memo, read it over, and let us and/or TEA know what you think.
Each year we invite our legislators to participate in an open forum so that you, as educators, can quiz them about what is on your mind. The Legislature will reconvene for a vote on tenure on January 12th and SCEA felt you needed to have a chance to get in your 2 cents worth and better understand what is before them.
Therefore, we have asked them to meet with you on Thursday, January 7th from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Station Camp High School cafeteria. Please make plans to attend and have your questions ready. We look forward to seeing you then.
Why did 6 Board members (Fussell, Brewer, Hale, Long, Gregory, Brown) not ratify the contract?
According to Ron Hosse, Chief Board Negotiator the reason was, “ The (6) Board members did not have a problem with Fringe Benefits article except for the Retirement Incentive. They did not seem to have a problem with the details of the incentive but they did have a problem with the fact that it is mandatory that the Retirement Incentive be offered at least once during the life of the contract whether it is financially advantageous to the school system or not.”
When do negotiations start on this matter?
Wednesday, December 16, 2009, from 4:00 – 5:00 Pm at the Board of Education meeting room.
How will SCEA address this issue?
Until SCEA knows how the Board wants this change, it is not possible to predict SCEA’s response. Once we have received the proposal, we will solicit your input and design a counter proposal.

Today NEA launched NEA Today Action. We’ve created this new Web site at a time when we expect education reform to begin to move to the forefront of the national agenda. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act is up for reauthorization, and the Obama Administration is fully engaged in the Race to the Top and School Improvement Grants.
We invited Education Secretary Arne Duncan and the leaders of the Congressional education committees — Democrats and Republicans — to share their vision for federal education policy. We also reached out to a governor for perspective from the state level.
But this conversation is not complete without you! So check out the site. Consider what the policymakers have to say, then let us know what you have to say. NEA has opened up the channels of communication. Now’s the time to talk back and let decision makers know what you think.
I want to hear from you!
